RepresentWomen’s 2024 Gender Parity Index!

RepresentWomen announces their 2024 Gender Parity Index.

In August 2013, RepresentWomen launched the Gender Parity Index (GPI) to track progress toward gender-balanced governance and identify opportunities to increase women's political representation in the U.S. Each year, we assign all 50 states a Gender Parity Score, letter grade, and ranking based on their proximity to gender parity. Our latest findings reveal that progress is still unstable and potentially slowing down.

Overview of the 2024 GPI

The GPI is a weighted analysis of women’s representation in all 50 states. Each state gets a letter grade and score and based on how well women are represented in elected office at the federal, state, and local levels.

Here are some highlights from this year:

  1. The U.S. is over halfway to parity, with an average Parity Score of 27, but only 24 of the 50 states earned above 25 points and have passed the halfway mark, and 26 states earn “D” grades.

  2. No state earns an “F” grade, marking a new milestone in the Index’s history. After eight years in a row, Louisiana  (45th place) earned its first “D” grade.

  3. Oregon and Maine both maintained their “A” grades, marking the second time that two states earned an “A.” Oregon ranks first, with 54 points. Maine ranks second with 53 points.
